The article it is about that health experts want to reduce in the number of pubs and bars in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Health experts are now urging city councillors to close every fifth pub and bar in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I have just one thing to say to them: Are you insane?

If you close them I die, me and another thousand of people who enjoy the great nightlife of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Please don’t close them, we really need them. They are good for the society. Ok I sound like a really alcoholic, but I am not. I just like to go out for drinks with friends, and when that happens the more bars are open the better for us.

Although I guess probably they have solid good arguments to try to close all those bars in Copenhagen, Denmark.

But at the same time I think they would have to consider the right of all of us who used them in a proper way (well that proper way it is discussable jejeje).

Maybe they should concentrate their energy in trying to help better those people with alcohol problems or in other ways of prevention (like learning the young people about the problems of alcohol abuse), instead of trying to close down all my favourite bars in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Skål to all of you.

I read the article to give my opinion at The Copenhagen Post

How does Copenhagen, Denmark help the busiest bicycle street in the world?

How does Copenhagen, Denmark help the busiest bicycle street in the world?

It’s a great day in Denmark, everybody!

Well, it is at least is you are one of the thousands of people that use a bicycle across Nørrebrogade in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I read an article regarding that The Copenhagen City Council has decided to make Nørrebrogade a car-free street.

I think that is fantastic. Well, at least for me, because I don’t have a car. When I lived in Copenhagen, Denmark I used to ride on Nørrebrogade a lot with my bicycle. It is a nice street. So, the combination of cars and bicycles wasn’t perfect.

I am sorry to hear that the owners of business in that street are complaining. I can imagine that it would affect them. That’s what happens when the government gets involved with something, a part of the society receives a benefit out of it and another part gets negative results. In theory they are always looking out for the majority, but it feels awful when you are in the little minority that got affected. You feel like an impotent insect and you really think that life and the world it is not fair.

According to the technical and environmental department, Nørrebrogade in Copenhagen, Denmark is the busiest bicycle street in the world.

The article that I read to give my opinion is on The Copenhagen Post

Is the main business street in Copenhagen, Denmark (strøget) becoming worse for business?

It is a great day in Denmark, everybody!

Well, at least if you are a human statue or you sell bottles of water on the streets. And not so much if you own a business on the busiest business street in Copenhagen, Denmark (strøget)

I read an article regarding that the owners of the business are complaining about a situation that is developing more and more. This situation it is the amount of human statues and people selling stuff on strøget (the busiest business street in Copenhagen, Denmark)

I have 2 things to say about this situation.

The first thing it is that I am in favour of the owners of business. I understand if they get angry with others selling water, jewellery and stuff on Strøget close to them. They pay really, really, really high rents to be there on top positions on that street. The business in not very good this year for anyone, they are also force to be close on Sundays and on top they have al kinds on small business blocking the view the clients could have to their business. And sometimes this little places on the street sell things very cheap, like bottles of water. And the stores sell them more expensive, because they need to pay rent.

You know what I would do if I where you, I will close my store, stop paying those high rents and move all my things and sell them also in the streets.

I believe in fair competition, of course. But it is irritating that there is a lot of smart people out there taking advantage of the business that try to do things right and do all the effort.

I understand that everybody needs to eat, and that it is VERY, VERY, VERY difficult to earn money these days, to open your own business and to be noticed by customers. But you need to play fair or at least use some techniques to get some customers to your water stand, but them move away of the street, do not abuse.

Why don’t all these human statues and small business get together and work as a team. They should all move to another empty street close to the centre and make it some much fun and cosy that it would become a tourist attraction and tourist and customers will start visiting their street.

It would be funny if they succeed to see Louis Vuitton send sellers to that street, trying to sell their products.

The second thing I wanted to say it is that actually the businesses need these human statues and the small food stores on the streets. Nobody wants to walk on a cold, burying street. I love to walk on Strøget because it is full with life. And I will say this to owners, believe me, that if I want to buy something at your store I will buy it, with or with out the human statue. But I stay longer on Strøget because of the human statues and because of those who sell almonds with caramel (which I love).

So in conclusion I will say that it should be a symbiosis. They need each other, and they should try to co-exist together with out any of them abusing of each other. They should threat each other fair and play by the unwritten rules of fairness.

We should all try to contribute to the society however we can, and not just suck from the society however we can.

The article I read to give my oponion about this topic is on The Copenhagen Post.

Who is poor in Denmark?

It’s a great day in Denmark, everybody!
Well, not for those who earns below 11.926 kr. every month (before taxes).

This information was taken from a survey it was made here in Denmark. (I want to make clear that this it is not necessary the same that living on the streets, as some very few do here in Denmark).

Regarding those few people that are living on the streets here in Denmark I can see a BIG, BIG, BIG difference to my homeland Mexico, and it is that here in Denmark they are in that situation because they have chose it (because in Denmark every single person that lives in here could have a decent economic life if he/she wants it, but in Mexico many people that lives in the streets are in that situation because they don’t have other option).

The good thing about Denmark it is that no matter how bad your situation is you will still have the opportunity to have food in your table and studies, unless of course you get divorce and start taking alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and gambling all at the same time. Then of course you will use all the little money you earn or that the state gives you.

In Mexico unfortunately you can end living in the streets even though you don’t take alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and gamble all at the same time. And if you have hit the bottom in Mexico, well game over, because, nobody will help you to start over again.

What Denmark needs to do to attract and retain highly educated and qualified workers?

What Denmark needs to do to attract and retain highly educated and qualified workers?

I believe that what Denmark needs to do to attract highly educated and qualified workers and to make the ones that we are already here stay, is the following:

I heard somewhere an opinion about that Denmark should gain and keep highly educated workers from around the world true their wallets.

I disagree, because that will NEVER happen.

The whole Danish system should have to change for us, and tax exceptions will have to be made for us which will not be fair.

In my opinion what Denmark should do to attract and keep highly educated and qualified workers from around the world is:

To sell itself like it really is,

To tell the truth plane and simple about really how life is here in Denmark,

Not saying in any case that it will be beneficially for a person economically to come to live and work here,

But to tell them that here a person will be middle class, but it would work in a clean and safe environment,

To drop that happiest place in the world to live in thing, because it creates so high expectations for us the foreigners, that no country in the world can fulfil (I think it would be more effective in the short and long term for Denmark to be the second happiest country in the world to live in, instead of number one).

I believe that there are many doctors, nurses, lawyers, engineers, bankers, architects, etc in the world that are tired to work in places were because of their money they feel insecure, or that they will rather earn less money, but live in a more modern, efficient, well functioning and clean society.

Denmark should start promoting itself as a good and safe place to work, were everybody is equal and live well.

<a style="padding: 0px 6px; (because of the high taxes that we pay).

Which it is a big obstacle for Denmark in its goal to attract and retain highly educated and qualified workers, because with a high education and working experience you can live like a king in all the countries around the world.

The 2 things that Denmark has and they are very difficult to buy in the rest of the world are:

Safety for you and your family

Modern, clean and well functioning society

You can get richer, go faster professionally, live in bigger houses, eat better food, etc in other countries. But I am sure that many will like to change that to the fact to be able to bike to their works (with out the traffic, pollution or insecurity).

Also Denmark they should make a really, really big effort and campaign against the slogan that the Danish language it is impossible to learn or at least super hard. I have learnt the Danish language, and I am not especially good at languages.

And definitely people from Denmark should try to be more open when it comes to new immigrants.

They should be better at making foreigners feel at home.

A little bit more of “mi casa es tu casa” (my house is your house, which is a Mexican expression showing hospitality).

The Danes will gain a friend for live (and our gratefulness for life) if they invite us to their houses to dinner once in a while or drink something in a bar, etc.

I know the Danes are very busy people (busy enjoying their lives and country), that they feel they don’t need us, but from what I have heard from the news it is that actually they DO need us.

Should the stores in Copenhagen and in Denmark be closed?

It is a great day in Denmark, everybody!

Well, not so much if you own a store in Copenhagen or in Denmark.

There is a law limiting the number of hours stores may be open. On top of that we are still in the middle if the Financial Crisis and that consumers and tourist in general are not spending as much as in other years, now the stores will also have to close on the weekends.

Of course right now it is a big damage for the stores because of all the tourists that are right now in Copenhagen and in the rest of Denmark. But also the rest of the year, I think it is big inconvenient that the stores are closed on the Sunday.

Normally I am very busy during the week (not right now because I am unemployed), and it would be very nice to use my Sundays to go out and buy all the things I will like to buy. And meanwhile I buy and walk around the city I will also spend money (which is good for the city) drinking a coffe or buying an ice cream.

I think this new law should be reconsider.

What are the Danish people more proud of Denmark?

It is a great day in denmark, everybody!

Well, at least if you are a Dane. Probably more difficult than here in Denmark, just for the fact that we are much more Mexicans applying than the number of Danish applying. Simple mathematics. Well, at least this is what I think.

Although in the other hand, one good thing about the Mexican system it is that we have public and private universities. So, if you cannot enter to the public University, you need (or your parents) to make an economic effort to assist to one of the private Universities.

I studied in a public University in Mexico. And believe me it was really difficult and stressful to enter. But I managed to do it, and enter in my first try. Now I can see things differently, and now I can picture in my head all those faces that back then I didn’t saw, because I was so busy celebrating with the other ones that also got admitted. But now I remember that there were many with a very long and sad face because they didn’t get admitted.

Life it is difficult.

I think Denmark should make an extra effort to try to help those students that will not get accepted. Because I can imagine that if they get rejected, some of them they will get angry and lose the motivation to try again. And the most valuable thing a country like Denmark can have it is high-educated Danish people (or foreigners).

And it is because here in Denmark there is only the option of public Universities (there aren’t any private universities, or if they are they are just very few).

If any of you that got rejected today read this, I want to let you know that I understand your frustration.

I live it everyday when I send job applications and I get constantly rejections.

Don’t give up and keep trying to get an education, believe me it is worth. For me being a lawyer has giving me a great satisfaction in Mexico and here in Denmark.

Copenhagen Business School
Aarhus School of Business
University of Copenhagen
Aarhus University

Article in Politiken.dk

Frequently Asked Questions about this Blog

Why should an immigrant open a Blog in denmark?

Why are we the immigrants in Copenhagen and in Denmark very passive in the society?

Why are we the immigrants in Copenhagen and in Denmark very passive in the society?

We are over 200.000 immigrants living in Denmark.

I read a lot of newspapers (in Danish and in English), forums and blogs very frequently, and it has gotten my attention the fact that we the immigrants, we are not very participative in sharing our opinions, debating and expressing ourselves.

We do share our opinion, debate and express ourselves, but in private.

Is it because of the language?

Is it because we don't care at all about Denmark and we are just always thinking about our home countries?

Is it because we have nothing to say?

Is it because we live surrounded in Denmark by friends, in my case Mexicans, of our own country?

Is it because there aren't enough newspapers, blogs, and forums in English?

Is it because the Danes don't let us?

Is it because it is forbidden in Denmark to have an opinion and express it?

Is it because it is too difficult?

Is it because we don't know how?

Is it because we don't understand at all the Danish society and the life in Denmark?

I agree that it is difficult, and we feel sometimes isolate and confuse. Even thought in Denmark it is very easy to find information in the Internet about what to do, the culture here, how to get a job, etc, for some reason it is very cold to read all those facts and information, without a real opinion or comment.

I believe that the community of immigrants from all over the world that we live here in Denmark should try to be more participate in the society in Denmark.

Now the COP 15 United Nations Climate Change Conference Copenhagen 2009 is coming to the capital of Denmark, and it will be over after 2 weeks. Maybe Obama will come as well as the rest of my other friends from around the world. We will hear many Danes making comments, blogging, debating and having opinions that people can read in the newspapers and in the Web, but what about us?

We also live in this country,

We also have a voice,

We also recycle,

We also try to be eco-friendly,

We also use our bicycles (even in winter).

I am not saying that it has to be precisely a negative voice always; it is also welcome to have positive and constructive opinions about different things here in Denmark. For example, I like to live in Denmark, because it is a leader when it comes to try to control the contamination in the world. I think here in Denmark we are trying hard to recycle, etc.

It is possible to participate on the English blogs, forums and newspapers in Denmark. If at some point one finds these options limited, then learning Danish and start commenting in Danish blogs or newspapers, it is also an option.

Denmark wants us here and they need us. They need our work force and our sense of humour.

Denmark it is trying to reach to us, and trying (still in a very clumsy and not so very effective way) to make us happy and comfortable here, so we will stay.

They try to help us to learn Danish, to learn about the country and their culture, etc.

In this blog that I have, sometimes I feel awkward and uncomfortable having and opinion and expressing it about a country that it is not mine, but I am trying very hard to be participative with my opinions and start integrating and being a part of the everyday live in this country, even though I am and will always be MEXICAN (I love you Mexico).

It is a difficult process, the first years living here I only read the Mexican newspaper El Universal and not only because it was in Spanish, but because I didn't care about the news here in Denmark or Europe. Then I started to read a very popular newspaper in Spain (El Mundo) with more news about Europe. And now I read many Danish newspapers, although I still read El Mundo, the New York Times, The guardian, an also occasionally the newspaper El Universal from Mexico.

It is very freighting to embrace the idea that I am adapting here and that this is my second home, I don't want to stop being Mexican, I don't want to stop liking my tamales and guacamole, I don't want to forget Spanish, I don't want to stop being Latino.

But little by little I am starting to realize (I still have a long, log way to go) that it could be possible to open my heart to Denmark, without EVER stopping being Mexican.

And I also try not to compare the 2 countries.

We have tequila and here we have Gammel Dansk
We have mariachis and here there isn't anything a like
We have piñata and here NO piñata
We have big families and strong bonds with our families and here more or less
We have Cancun and Playa del Carmen and here we have Skagen.
We have tacos and here we have rugbrød.
We have ........... And so on

Of course if every single day I am repeating this thoughts in my brain, well of course I will tell to my wife vi ses skat (see you later), and return immediately to my beloved Mexico.

But I have taken the decision to live here, so I will try to do it 100% as I would do in Mexico. And try really hard to feel I belong, even though I am the only dark skin guy in the parties some times.

I think we should try to express our good or bad opinions about Denmark, and somehow I believe than that will help with 2 things:

Making us be more integrated and feel more at home

Maybe Denmark will keep doing the good things we mentioned and try to work to improve in the bad areas.

Does families eat together in Denmark?

It's a great day in Denmark, everybody!
Why?
Well, at least if you live in Denmark and enjoy having dinner with the family.

I read and interesting article about the eating habits here in Denmark.

It got my attention because it is so true, here in Denmark we are used to eat dinner together with the family.

In Mexico (south Mexico) it is still common to eat with the family at the lunch. It is at the lunch that we normally eat our big meal of the day.

Also in Mexico it is very common to go and eat (breakfast, lunch or dinner) out with the family or alone because it is so very cheap. Especially cheap compared to Denmark.

Here in Denmark the quality of the food at the cafes and restaurants it is very good, but it is also very expensive.

And also in Denmark there are not so many fast food restaurants and restaurants in general all over the cities as there are in Mexico.

In Mexico you find a taco's restaurant every 2 meters.

I liked the tradition in Mexico of eating with the family or going out to eat with all the family.

I also like and enjoy here in Denmark the habit of eating healthy, homemade food at dinner with the family.

I think it is very important for a family to be able to all of the members to eat together at least once a day. It is important for the communication, for the network and also because family it is a beautiful thing. Sometimes it is difficult to be a member of a family, but one of it's good things it is to eat together at lunch or dinner, also to participate in family events and parties.

A good advise I want to give to everybody it is to buy a washing machine. i lived here in Denmark my first 2 and a half years with out a washing machine, and it was almost the cause of a divorce. Having a washing machine it is not the perfect happiness in life, but it gets very close.

I just put everything there, it is fantastic.

I am also starting to make more food since I moved to Denmark. In Mexico I didn't really made almost any food. But here it is a complete different ball game. I have to help making the food and help cleaning everything after.

Actually I am very surprise of how nice it can be to make food (specially with nice music, preferably Jazz, and a glass of wine).

Actually I like all kinds of food and like making all kids of food although I am still very, very bad at it.

But because I am Mexican and I also LOVE the food from my country, I have started to be more active into the making of Mexican food and not just eating it. I have actually started to read a lot about the Mexican cuisine and recipes. I have even open my own blog about it.

One thing I don't really like here in Denmark are the breakfast, they are 99% of the times Musli or cereals and eating alone. In Mexico we often have a great variety of options for breakfast. And also because it is so cheap to eat out, we normally eat breakfast in a fast food Mexican restaurant (tortas) or in a normal restaurant.

But I have to say that here in Denmark one of my favourite things it is to go out some weekends to eat a brunch with the family.

Another thing I find difficult of living here in Denmark, regarding making food, it is how expensive things can be at the supermarkets. wow. And double wow if it is ecological food.

My last comment regarding making food here in Denmark it is that actually is very pleasant making food here, because of the high quality and useful kitchen products which are danish design like: Rosendahl, Bodum, etc.

Should a man be equal to a woman in Denmark?

It’s a great day in Denmark everybody!
Why?
Well, at least for the “almost” KING of Denmark Henrik.

He only has one more step to go to be KING.
And it shouldn’t be such a big step, I mean after all it is up to his wife now.

Good for him.

I mean, I can imagine that has to be one of his BIG dreams as some point in his childhood, as well as for almost all the boys in Europe.

In my case, and I think in most of the cases of the children in Mexico, one of our biggest dreams in our childhoods’ is to become PRESIDENTE DE LA NACION (President of the Country).

We don’t have a king in Mexico and we have never had one, well let me think again. I can remember we had one at some point but they killed him. One second let me Google this really fast. Actually he wasn’t really a king of Mexico, but more of an Emperor of Mexico”, but he didn’t last very long in this position. And of course after all the Mexicans saw what happened to him, well I believe the best option was to dream with being PRESIDENTE DE MEXICO instead (President of Mexico).

I think it is great if he manage to be KING of Denmark, because it is fare. I think they should be equal. A queen an his king and vice versa (by the way I think the queen of Denmark is GREAT, I really like her. She is very charismatic and she seems very, very intelligent. Actually now that I think about it I will try to make a post later about one of her hobbies: to paint).

Is it possible to sell a property in Denmark these days at a reasonable price?

It’s a great day in Denmark, everybody!
Why?
Well, at least if you are planning to buy a property or something in a store.

I think is really hard this financial crisis for everybody in all the areas. It has changed everything very drastically. It is hard to live in this surrealistic economic world. The prices of the houses and apartments are very low.

It is difficult these days to be the owner of a property and try to sell it at a good price or be the owner of a business and try to make money with that business.

It is really what they call here in Denmark købmandsmarket (that the market belongs to the buyers right now).

If you have cash flow right now, you are the king, when it comes to setting your demands to buy.

I was happy to read that there are some owners of properties that decide to take their properties out of the marked, if they got offers that were for low.

I think is fare and good for the economy that there are some that will put some limits.

I think even thought it is hard; the owners of properties and business should try to work as a team.
The owners of the properties should try to sell them at a reasonable low price and the owners of business shouldn’t just sell all their products with 80% discount.

It is very difficult not to think in a very selfish way these days when it comes to sell your product, with out thinking in your competence moderate discount strategy.

I entered to a store the other day to look for an item that was already in discount, but because I walked a way having second thoughts, I was offered an even better discount if I decided to buy it. Actually the second discount it wasn’t necessary for me, because I had already taken the decision of buying with the first price.

I know how frustrating it can be to try to sell something this year (something that you consider it is worth something) and to receive really low offers.

The problem is that if there is no low limit, we are only affecting each other a lot. It is very difficult to set your selling price for your property (house, car, etc), because you are necessary thinking what is your competence doing.

To sell your product you need to go lower that everybody else. But what if they are already very low?

To sell houses and cars yourself, you might one to try with these internet sites:
http://www.boligportal.dk/
http://boligbasen.dk/forside.asp

Is it possible to open your own business in Denmark?

It is a great day in Denmark, everybody!
Why?
Well, it is for Karin Laursen.

I have one thing to say to her and it is: Respect!

I read an article (Danish) in the Jyllands-Posten regarding a woman that after being secretary for many years at TDC, she managed to open her own business.

Good for you Karin. I admire you because having my own business it is one of my dreams.

I know that it is difficult. I have tried twice.
1.- I opened my law firm in Mexico
2.- I opened a webshop in Denmark to import silver jewellery from Taxco, Mexico and then sell it here in Denmark.

I was very glad to read this article because she is Danish. I say this because from my experience of living here in Denmark for some years, I have notice that there aren’t so many Danish that are driven by the impulse of having their own business.

I assume that it is because the working conditions are very good here in Denmark. The salary is good; the working schedule is good, etc.

But in my eyes, if there were more Danish or foreigners opening business in Denmark that will also mean more job opportunities for everybody, and also even more happy people. Because in my experience having your own business even thought it is very difficult and hard work it gives you a special satisfaction.

I am not saying that if a person in Denmark has a good job and it happy with it, should quit and go to open a business.

But after many, many years of working in a company or if a person it is not complete satisfied with the job, I think it would be important to make the step and open a business.

Also here in Denmark there is A LOT (well a good amount) of support if one will like to open a business.

I remember that when I opened my webshop I assisted to a meeting in an office where they gave advices and orientation regarding different topics.

Also Denmark it is a good land to find information regarding many topics in the Internet. The institutions here have a lot of very helpful information online; and how to open your own business it is not the exception. It is possible to find information about taxes, obligations, who will be your competence, etc online.

Is it difficult to open a business?
Yes

Is it worth it?
Yes

Is it possible in Denmark?
Yes

Should I wait to be unemployed, because of the financial crisis, to open my own business?
No. I think the best way to start a business it is as a hobby first, then it should come the part were I try to build little by little the business besides my stable job and then if runs well after some years, I can quit my job.

Is it scary?
Yes

Will it be a success?
I will never now, until I try it.

I like the business culture in Mexico, because we are very open when it comes to start new business. The bad side of it, it is that many open their business with out having a clue of anything and with out the right orientation. So unfortunately many businesses they never really develop.

So the best thing I think is as I have always said is: something in the middle between Mexico and Denmark.

Not opening 1 business every month and not opening 100 business every month, but instead opening 50 good ones with future and good bases.

Oh and of course when ever I open a business, I really need to feel that it burns inside of me the idea and product I will sell or service I will give.

Does it rains in Denmark?

It's a great day in Denmark, everybody!
Well, not so much regarding the weather.

Yesterday it rained and today is raining again.

Rain in Copenhagen. Photo by Uploaded.

It is the 12 of June, we are almost at the middle of June and still we haven’t had a really long period of sunny and warm days.

Yes, we have had some in April, May and in June, but not a really, really long period.

But it is always funny with the weather and the Danes. Today I complained about the weather to my wife (normally I don’t complain about the weather, I just accepted how it comes here in Denmark, except in January and February which I really dislike) and she answered me: yes it is true now the weather it is not very nice, but in July and August it is normally very good and warm.

I couldn’t help laughing and thank her for the idea that of all the year here in Denmark July and August will be good (and of course there is still a maybe).

The Danes can really go to the extremes, when it comes to the weather in Denmark: either they are really positive and proud of it (specially summer and December) or they are really negative about it all year around.

Actually we have been unlucky, because I have been living in Denmark some years now, and the summer it is usually very good and nice.

But unfortunately there are always years that are an exception, like that year that I can remember it rained almost all summer. It was the year we saw does pictures in the newspapers about Roskilde concert completely under water, and at the end they had to cancel it (let us hope this summer will be a good sunny summer).

Reasons of why an immigrant should open a Blog in Denmark.

In my case I believe that my top reasons to open my blogs, meanwhile I live here in Denmark are:

It’s a great day in Denmark, everybody!

1.
